On June 26th 2008, the 11th National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China- China’s top legislative body, has ratified a bill submitted the Central Government for China’s accession to the Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

Global Day of Action against cluster bombs

Exactly one month before a major international negotiation to ban cluster bombs, campaigners in over 50 countries worldwide are calling on governments to deliver a strong treaty with no exemptions, no loopholes and no delays. The Global Day of Action - a series of protests from Azerbaijan to Zambia - is urging governments to ensure the negotiations result in a treaty that will not only ban the use, production, stockpiling and transfer of cluster bombs, but also include support for affected communities and clearance of contaminated land.

The UN human rights and development official declared that the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and Optional Protocol has through the legal threshold at 4th April. 4 April 2008 - Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged greater support for the nearly half a million survivors of landmines and explosive remnants of war around the world to enable them to realize their rights and be productive members of society.

Global Disability Network Calls for National Implementation
(New York, United Nations, April 3, 2008): RI congratulates the Government of Ecuador for ratifying the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and Optional Protocol today, becoming the 20th State Party to the Convention and thereby triggering the treaty’s entry into force. In 30 days, the UN Convention will be binding international law for all states that have ratified and will give persons with disabilities in these countries a powerful legal instrument to defend their rights. The ratification of the Convention by 20 States in just one year demonstrates a strong commitment to the principles of non-discrimination, inclusion and equal opportunities for all people in society.

On One Year Anniversary of Historic Signing Ceremony
Global Disability Network urges other countries in the Arab region to follow Jordan’s example

(New York, United States, March 31, 2008): RI congratulates the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan for ratifying the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), becoming the first nation in the Arab region to do so, and further demonstrating its commitment to the human rights of persons with disabilities. Jordan was among the first countries to sign the Convention one year ago, at a historic signing ceremony at the UN Headquarters on March 30, 2007. Jordan is now the 18th State to ratify the CRPD, drawing closer to the 20 ratifications required for the treaty to become international law.

The convention on the Right of Person with Disabilities will become effective to the signature members in this May.

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol were adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 13 December 2006, and opened for signature on 30 March 2007.

The law prohibits discrimination against persons with physical and mental disabilities in employment, education, and access to health care, and the government effectively enforced these provisions.
